Fucking hell. Now I can only write about filmmaking. Here goes…
So, with regards to video editing, Final Cut Pro and After Effects are clearly a winning choice. For the longest time I was using Adobe Premiere 6.5 (way back when) and it was decent (because I didn’t know better). Then, I switched to Avid Xpress Pro a bit later and loved it.
However, Avid Xpress Pro did have a few flaws. For instance, instead of pulling from wherever your files are, it imports them as a copy into its bin. So, with this you will be doubling the amount of space being used. Not that this is completely a bad thing though, because with linking, sometimes searching for offline (moved) files can be a drag. Anyway, Avid also seemed not to handle mixtures of file formats.
Once in FCP and AE, it was smooth sailing. Final Cut Pro and After Effects both run off of the main file source, compared to creating copies. They both handle different file types easily and all around kick ass. It’s great.
I’m working on an old-school style 2D cartoon project right now and found AE and FCP to be the best combination for it. I started the same project in Avid and had nothing but problems. One problem Avid had was dealing with multiple layers. Sure I could have exported ten layers to quicktime and then reimported it back to treat it as one layer and then build more, but who the hell wants to do that? With AE, you can just make a group of layers into it’s own composition and link it to another with more layers and edit back and forth quickly. Not that it can’t handle mounds of layers, because it can. It’s great.
The internet keeps surfing me.
